Where was this John McCain during this campaign? You know, the one that spoke freely and directly, and with a healthy sense of humor. Once again the parallel to Bob Dole is unmistakable. Dole had a rapier-like wit that his handlers convinced him to suppress during the election, and as a result he came across as a dour old man and was creamed by Clinton in 1996. Look for this electoral map to be similar.
It didn't help any that McCain made mistake after mistake that made us question his competence, if not his general lucidity.
